This forum "started" with regards to CY GIRL figures by BBI (U.S. versions of Takara COOL GIRL figures back then). Flash forward to now . . . and BBI is pretty much out of the game (for now/for the time being) and Takara is not Takara Tomy, but with COOL GIRL figures being out of basically everyone's price range unless your a die hard completist/COOL GIRL "snob" (and I mean this with affection because I'm a COOL GIRL snob myself). A good number of us are fortunate in being at the right place at the right time and managed to procure CY GIRL/COOL GIRL figures throughout this forum's history as well as it's offshoots such as the BBI Perfect Body figures and assorted 1:6 female figures from other companies. Considering there is nothing on the horizon from BBI other than their last CY GIRL "Mystere" which IMHO is not really a CY GIRL, but simply in name only and Takara Tomy COOL GIRL offerings getting a cold reception due to pricing (let's be honest about this) for multitudes of reasons. Are Takara Tomy COOL GIRL / BBI CY GIRL figures still relevant? We're making do with our respective cache/stash/stock by customizing/kitbashing (for those of us able) and finding creative and interesting ways to keep the COOL GIRL/CY GIRL bandwagon going. Discussion is plenty covering everything from praise to complaints and dearth as always. This forum is still attracting new members who are late in the game, but still . . . We have more choices (subject to debate) nowadays compared to back then with what is being offered from other companies. Yes. I know not everyone is going to agreeable or receptive with what other companies have to offer for variety of reasons. However, our collective 1:6 hearts and minds so to speak still embrace and remember the good ole days of CY GIRL and COOL GIRL offerings that is within the collection of many members here. Is it still relevant?

The other figures have been a continuation of the cosplay theme that they started with Cutey Honey and Princess Jun. "Relevance" is a matter of opinion. Mystere is just as relevant as Triad's G4H Vanity (so far the ONLY female figure from Triad still in the CG spirit IMO...I suppose Lola could be an undercover agent of some sort, but Vanity just screams out SPY ) As far as I'm concerned, it's just a way of drawing attention to the fact that 12 inch tall female figures can be more than just shopaholics with vapid grins. Oh sweet jeebus, i've actually replied to a thread by DELTAFORCECHUNG... "Up with miniskirts!!! "

For me, yes, CGs will always be relevant. They are what brought me back to the 1:6 doll/figure hobby and they are the reason I continue to collect and play with 1:6 figures. While I do enjoy the non-CG figures in my collection, the CG's populate the majority of my figures and are the driving force behind everything else 1:6th wise that I do--all of my other figures, sets, props, sewing, building, etc., are only there to compliment or accessorize my CGs. I have no complaints whatsoever with any of my CGs so I will continue to buy them and enjoy them for as long as they continue to be produced. I'm probably going to get pelted with rotton fruit and veggies, but I've never considered Mystere to be a true CG, either --mostly because she came with a PB body and to me that"s just soooo... wrong... and not at all comparable to a CG. Í happen to loathe the PB body, though, so I am extremely biased (but that's a whole nother can of worms) And to show that I'm not singling out Mystere, I don't actually consider any of the PB figures to be CGs--even the Stage one PBs who came with duplicates of the Jet, Sky and Kat heads. I have been lucky enough to collect all of the original PBs and I love their noggins--especially the Stage 2 bruenette's noggin, which, mounted on a CG 2.0 body, is my favoritist figure in my collection, but there is simply no comparison at all between CGs and PBs for me. I am and always have beeen a CG snob starting with Kat, AJ, and Jet and their sisters on down to Missy (Misato) the latest release. Do I wish they cost half as much as they do now? Of course. Would I love to pick them up at $29 or $39 bucks a pop? You bet! But these days you can rarely pick up the older CGs for that price so to me it's the same as everything else--prices continue to climb--and until I find another figure that is on par toe-to-toe with a CG 2.0 in looks, quality, theme or durability, I'd rather but one or two of them than case loads of anything else. They'll be a part of my collection for a long time I hope. But I am too stubborn (and too broke) to fall for the marketing tactics of exclusives and (company planned) scarcity. You can call it whatever you want, but figures that are no more complicated to make than Ice are now triple the price. For the price of one Misato, I would rather have four evo/evas from Triad, plus a large pizza from Dominos and a case of drinks for any friends who want to come over and help me de-box. I would feel insecure about their value holding up too. Takara had the monopoly on nicely sculpted fem-fig.s in 2005. Today there are more companies than ever in that market. I guess it's easy to get on the high horse because I've always been able to get 2.0's for less. And now I have what I need. People sell the bodies on Ebay, or the less popular ones go on sale. I am hoping that the Triad Alphas will be good enough to compete with the 2.0. Honestly, I'm tired of all my figures having the same body. I even let a couple of Volks into the house for chrissakes -- those baby hands ...gahhh!!! But the economy is making me stick to my max figure dollar limit on this one. No $200 figures for me unless it comes with something that will help me make $200

I bought their Harley figure because I liked that set better than CG Nikki. Out of their endless parade of licensed figures, the only one I purchased is the Motoko in motorcycle garb. I don't really have any use for anything that comes in their current offerings, not even the bodies or head sculpts. To be fair, I'm probably not in their target market. The highly regarded 2.0 body is nice, and I'm grateful I was able to buy them at their original prices (I give a slight edge to the PB for its versatility). The most relevant thing Takara has done recently is the release of the nude "Rose" body. I was hoping Mystere would mark a return of the CG concept, but I haven't heard of any future releases. While my original Cys and PBs form the core of my female characters, I see products from other companies as sources for my newer characters.

I think new releases will continue to be relevant in that folks like us will always pay attention, even if it's just to comment on how expensive they are or how much they continue to depart from the formula that fired most of our imaginations to begin with...even if we don't like 'em, we love to talk about them.

As for Takara/BBi, the question is almost rhetorical. They are the "creme de la femme" of this hobby. There has been nothing I've found to match or exceed them as strict female action figures. MWD has changed over the years and I'm sure a great deal of this has occurred due to the changes undergone with the Cool Girl line . When they first came out , there were no other action girls that could hold a candle to a CG - from articulation and design concept all the way to accessories and quality . Now there are quite a few alternative " action girl " lines to choose from , all with varying degrees of success at trying to emulate the magic of Takara's original line . As far as I'm concerned , the only real " potential successor " of the CG concept is Triad , so hopefully as they grow and mature we'll get to see a renaissance of the CG template . Takara's Cool Girl line is relevant only to " hardcore collectors " , not the general action girl enthusiast who tends to go for more affordable , more mass audience appealing offerings . As far as BBi remaining relevant - that's harder to determine , if only due to their apparent indecision concerning their Cy Girls . They have the potential to capture the US market for action girls but are sitting on the sidelines with only token releases . They need to develop a strategy and a plan and a production schedule if they want to be considered relevant . With their perfect bodies they have a base like Hasbro had with GI Joe when they moved into the Adventure Team era - all they need do is follow up with " Accessory and Costume Sets " and they could rock and roll . I do enjoy the hobby more because there's more 1/6 accessories now than before. Though my CGs were bought in the late ninties, I'm always looking to upgrade or change their look with new accessories. I'm not into any investment on these but I believe I could sell them for more than I bought them for. I started out being a collector but it's so much fun to kitbash and it keeps the relevence of my CG hobby going.

The first 3 CGs did not come out until 2001. I don't think they were even previeweed until sometime in 2000.
