I had to make Thatcher a new set of specs over the winter (lost the old ones damn it!) and I used this basic idea myself.

I'm thinking this could be another use for the longer twist ties ... the wire ones with the clear plastic cover. I've used the thin steel wire of an RC car antenna to fashion frames for my figures.
You also can use clear 2-part resin to dip enclosed frames and get real magnifying lenses.
Here's a set with resin lenses.

I just bought some off ebay, and facepalmed - they are just printed on transparencies with an ink jet. A bit fiddly to cut out, but they look quite good.
There's also transparencies for lasers printers
